Het laatste nieuws is echter dat de eerste twee rondes van de Enduro World Series worden verschoven op de kalender, én dat de seizoensopener van het World Cup seizoen in het Portugese Lousã simpelweg uitgesteld is tot nader order.
Echt ontkomen aan het nieuws kom je nergens vandaag de dag. En hoewel sommigen nog vonden dat de berichtgeving – ook hier op deze website – bijdraagt aan de hysterie, is het een simpel gegeven dát het Corona-virus effecten heeft die niet te negeren zijn.
Enduro World Series ronde 1 & 2 verschoven
Zojuist werd bekend dat de eerste twee rondes van de Enduro World Series (EWS) worden verschoven op de kalender. De eerste ronde in Manizales, Columbia aan het einde van deze maand wordt verschoven naar het weekend van 7 en 8 november. Ronde twee, gehouden in Farellones, Chili, zou plaatsvinden op 4 en 5 april, maar wordt verschoven naar 14 en 15 november 2020.

Chris Ball, Managing Director of the Enduro World Series, said: “In order to best protect all staff, riders, fans and act in the most responsible way possible in the world’s current situation, we have made the decision to postpone our first two rounds. We hope the early decision of this date change helps to remove stress from a situation that is causing us all a great deal of difficulty. We look forward to getting our season started in May and thank all of our partners and staff for their support in these challenging times.”
Speaking from Colombia, round one Race Director Jorge Mario Jaramillo said: “The planet faces a fairly delicate health situation. This situation has globally affected multiple massive events, mainly sports. For the global well-being of athletes and spectators, and for recommendations of local, national and world authorities it is out of our hands and we have no choice but to delay the EWS Manizales. The party is postponed!”
And round two Race Director Ignacio Barboas added: “We as Montenbaik see this as an opportunity, since we will have the last race of the year of the Enduro World Series. This gives us more time to surprise everyone even more with the best trails and a high-level event.”
Eerste Downhill World Cup vooralsnog uitgesteld
Eerder vandaag kwam het nieuws naar buiten dat de opener van het World Cup seizoen in het Portugese Lousã nu officieel uitgesteld tot nader order vanwege restricties in het land ten aanzien van evenementen met meer dan 1000 personen op één hoopje.
Met een deel van de andere World Cups rondom de Alpenlanden is het slechts een kwestie van koffiedik kijken wat daarmee zal gaan gebeuren. Maar met het oog op de volgende World Cups (downhill) in Slovenië en Kroatië, in de nabijheid van Italië, zijn de kansen dat die evenementen wél doorgaan niet vanzelfsprekend.
Het organiserende team van Lousã kwam met onderstaande statement:
According to the “Orientation” of 03/10/2020 of the Director-General of Health, Graça Freitas, there are several points that make the realization of this event unfavorable since it is considered as a mass event and can contribute to the increase of the spread infection, and with the priority of protecting public health, the following guidelines are established:
- Postpone or cancel all events that involve or may involve the concentration of more than 150 people in municipalities where there are clusters (or outbreaks) with secondary transmission of COVID-19 or when there are confirmed cases in relation to which finds the epidemiological link.
- Postpone or cancel all events that, even with a concentration of less than 1,000 people, involve or may involve the participation of people who were present, in the last 14 days, in areas where there is active and sustained community transmission of the virus, namely, to date, Italy, China, South Korea, Iran, Japan and Singapore, updated according to the epidemiological evolution.
- Without prejudice to the previous guidelines, postpone or cancel all events that take place outdoors and that involve the concentration of more than 5,000 people.
The new date for the event will be the subject of debate between the organizing entity and the maximum organ of world cycling next week, Montanha Clube and UCI.
Montanha Clube, as the event’s organizer, regrets what happened, which is a serious national and global public health problem.
